The Hurt Locker

I saw the Hurt Locker last night. This movie started me out with and anxious feeling that really never left. Though I really liked it, I was left wondering how mediocre the rest of the movies of the past year must have been if this was considered the best out of the lot.

It was a good movie though. There were some pretty great one liners to think about. I especially liked the scene where the sergeant is playing with his son and tells him that the older you get, the less things you love. Cathy and I both struggled after seeing it to describe what it was about the movie that was compelling. Though at times graphic, it is a movie that anyone who lives in the relative safety of the United States should see just to be aware of what price is paid for that freedom and safety that we enjoy.

The acting was good, the story was compelling, and the cinematography was spectacular. Maybe the weakest link was the soundtrack, which seemed to be the least striking thing about the film. Still, I wouldn’t say this is a film that I would particularly call great. It certainly isn’t the “near-perfect war film” that Time‘s Richard Corliss called it. It’s a good film, one that I would recommend, but there are certainly others that come to mind that are as good or better. If you get the chance see it, but don’t let over flattering reviews make you expect too much. It’s just a pretty good flick.
